Gold medalist wows students

Nearly a decade after he won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Daniel Igali still dazzles crowds. Igali, who won a gold medal for Canada in wrestling, walked into the gym at Guildford Park secondary school last Friday to wild applause and cheers. Igali was visiting the high school as part of the Right to Play program, a partnership between the city and the school district aimed at embracing the spirit of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games and inspiring students to reach for their personal best.

Olympic champion Daniel Igali is hoping the campus community will join him on Saturday, Oct. 17 in an event to raise funds and awareness for his school project in Nigeria (see www.igali.com to sign up). The SFU criminology graduate student, together with Right to Play, will host the first annual Igali Run for the Kids at Surrey’s Bear Creek Park, located at King George Highway and 88th Avenue, from 8:30–noon. A 5k walk/run kicks off at 10 am. Igali opened Maureen Matheny Academy in his home village of Eniwari in 2006 after raising nearly $600,000 and overseeing its construction.

Igali Foundation Walk/Run 4 Children

Canadian gold medalists Daniel Igali, Simon Whitfield and Carol Huyhn will join forces on October 17, 2009 to kick off the first annual Igali Foundation Walk/Run 4 Children event, which organizers hope will raise awareness for the new academy Igali’s foundation built last year in Nigeria.

Igali, a Simon Fraser University graduate student and featured athlete in the online Canadian Olympic school campaign, hopes the walk will inspire others to help provide the basic necessities the Maureen Matheny Academy desperately needs.

Canadian Olympic champion Daniel Igali is inviting young and old to join him and a pair of fellow Olympians for the Igali Foundation’s first-annual Walk/Run for the Kids in Bear Creek Park.

Igali, a Simon Fraser University criminology graduate student and Surrey resident, and Simon Whitfield, a gold-medal triathlete, are ambassadors for Right To Play, an international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play programs to improve the health of kids. The foundation has partnered with the City of Surrey and Right to Play to kick off the inaugural event.
