While in camp
August 14 2000
We just finished an Olympic training camp in Calgary from the 7th-13th of August and it was a blast. This past week is one of those weeks where I felt like no one could touch me. If the Olympics were last week, I would have guaranteed a gold medal. It was that kind of a killer week. My personal trainer, Wayne Wilson came to the camp from Tuesday to Friday and pushed us hard on the weights. But with every passing day, I felt stronger, I wish this trend continues till the Olympics.
The awesome training situation in the camp completely erased the bitter taste I had from the final match at the Canada Cup. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to wrestle due to an injury default. I have been having ups and downs in training, but last week was an incredible high in my training. I had so much positive energy at the camp. It must have something to do with the atmosphere in Calgary.
We have three days off the mats this week. We don't start scrimmages again until Thursday. I welcome the break as it gets one thirsty to get back into scrimmage situations after a few days off. Meanwhile, I intend to get in two days of cardio workouts and one hard day of weight training before Thursday. Coach Richard Dechatelet, the head coach of Brock University told me that I'm better wrestler than I was when I won the World Championships last year. I can only agree with him.
While in camp, I received a letter from my Grandma in Nigeria. She writes:
"Dear Baraladei, How is life treating you overseas? Hope you're doing as well as I am over here. There is a lot of talk about the Olympics here, everybody here wish you well... On my part, I can only tell you to approach the Olympics like any other... Don't let success get into your head. I know you will do well, you always had the determination. We are praying fervently for your success, until we see you at Xmas, good hunting!"
How's that for encouragement! Till next week, keep sweating!
